Working with Same Sex Couples
Inclusive Practice: Working with Same Sex Couples in Therapy
Working with same sex couples in therapy brings unique opportunities — and unique responsibilities. Therapists are often trained in models based on heteronormative assumptions, and may feel unsure about whether or how to adapt their approach with LGBTQ+ couples.
This CPD webinar with Martin Grogan offers a compassionate, grounded introduction to inclusive practice. You’ll explore the relational and cultural factors that shape same-sex couples’ experiences, while reflecting on your own practice, intake processes, and assumptions.
Whether you’re newly qualified or have years of experience, this session offers both clinical insight and personal reflection on how to show up with clarity, confidence, and care.
What You’ll Learn
In this 2-hour recorded training, you’ll explore:
- Whether there are key differences between working with gay and straight couples — and what that means for your approach
- How to ensure your intake process and questions are inclusive and relevant
- How language, assumptions, and cultural dynamics shape the therapeutic relationship
- What therapists need to know about different couple constructs, identities, and relationship dynamics
- How to create an affirming, safe space for same sex couples in therapy
- Reflections from Martin’s decades of experience in mental, sexual, and relational health
